If you love the look of vintage Christmas ornaments but want something you can fully customize to suit your holiday style, these Mod Podge and fabric ornaments are such a fun and affordable project. These DIY decoupage Christmas ornaments are simple to make, beginner-friendly, and a great way to use up leftover fabric scraps.

This year I wanted a slightly vintage, handmade feel for my tree, so I went to my local craft store and picked out a range of vintage and red fabrics.. You can choose anything that suits your aesthetic!

materials needed

  • Material of your choice
  • Bulb Ornaments
  • Mod Podge
  • Paint Brush
  • Scissors
  • Rub and Buff or Paint
  • Ribbon/String

step 1: cut fabric for diy decoupage christmas ornaments

To start, cut your chosen fabric into thin strips. You’ll need Mod Podge and any ornaments you want to cover. You absolutely don’t need new ones—this is the perfect way to recycle older ornaments that no longer match your style.

step 2: paint mod podge onto bulbs

Paint a bit of Mod Podge directly onto the ornament, then place a strip of fabric on top. Continue painting Mod Podge over each piece as you go. The material will naturally have small bends and bubbles, but keep smoothing them down with your brush. The slight texture is what gives these ornaments that charming, vintage look.

Make sure to bring the fabric right up to the top of the ornament so there is an overhang. Once everything is fully dry, trim the excess with scissors. The goal is to have everything tucked up tightly so the ornament cap hides the raw edges.

step 3: paint bulb caps

You can keep the original topper if it matches your aesthetic, but I wanted a deeper, aged brass look. I painted mine with dark brown acrylic and then added a layer of rub and buff for that antique touch.

step 4: add ribbon

Add whatever ribbon best fits your tree. I used a deep green satin ribbon that added a really beautiful, elevated finish.

These ornaments cost only a few dollars each, and the materials go a long way. They turned out so charming, and I love how customizable they are. They’re perfect for anyone wanting a budget-friendly way to create ornaments that genuinely feel unique and personal.
