If you’re looking for Christmas ornament ideas that are affordable, customizable, and genuinely fun to make, DIY embroidery hoop ornaments are the perfect project. They’re simple enough for beginners, but they look elevated and handmade in the best way. I made a few using materials from my local craft store, and they instantly added a cozy, textured touch to my tree. They also make a great gift!
Here’s exactly how I put mine together and a few different ways you can decorate them so each ornament feels unique.

what you will need
- • Small embroidery hoops (any size works, but 3–4 inches are ideal for ornaments)
• Fabric of your choice (muslin, cotton, linen, canvas, leftover scraps)
• Faux stems or greenery picks
• Ribbon (velvet, satin, frayed cotton, or twine)
• Bells or small embellishments
• Hot glue gun and scissors
steps to creating diy embroidery hoop ornaments
step 1: choose your fabric

Cut a small square of fabric slightly larger than your hoop. This is where you can really personalize the look. I went to my local craft store to pick out different holiday patterns that I liked. Place the fabric in the embroidery hoop and tighten it so it’s smooth and centered.
step 2: add faux stems, ribbon or bells
This is where the ornament starts to feel like a mini wreath. I used small faux stems—think cedar picks, pine sprigs, or little berries. Trim them down to fit the hoop and hot glue them along the top or bottom edge. For a fuller look, layer two or three pieces together.

Ribbon adds such a simple finishing touch. I tried velvet for one ornament, satin for another. You can tie a bow directly onto the hoop or glue it above the faux greenery. I liked to try to hide the metal screw!
If you want to layer in more texture, tiny bells are a great option. Buttons, wooden beads, or miniature pinecones also work. Get creative!
step 3: trim the back and add your string

Flip the hoop over and trim the excess fabric. You can glue it down neatly on the wood. Then take your string or ribbon of choice and loop it through the metal screw so you can hang it on your tree.
